What is EBSDi?

I created  Evidence Based Self Defense Instruction (EBSDi) so that students could learn methods of self defense that were functional!  I incorporated my training in Clinical Psychology with the concepts of Jeet Kune Do.  In doing so, I ended up developing a series of techniques and methods that were "evidence based."  Evidence based is exactly what it means; the techniques and methods that have been chosen are based on evidence or "proof" that they are functional in a real fight situations.  Some of methods have been field tested and are considered military technology while others were experimented with in high stress, attack situations in controlled and uncontrolled environments.  In summary, EBSDi is an adaptive system of tools and methods that are highly effective in self defense situations!

What is RAT?

Rapid Assault Tactics (RAT) is a system developed by Paul Vunak, founder of Progressive Fighting Systems, for US Navy SEAL Team 6.  The basis of this system is to teach how to bypass an assailants attack and end any altercation in a precise and combative way. The RAT is based on realistic defense methods.  These methods are streamlined in order to be taught in a short amount of time and still maintain complete effectiveness.  The system is guided by one principle; surviving an attack situation through the use of effective and functional combative means that can be taught efficiently and quickly.

That RAT has been influenced by several arts: Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, Filipino Kali, Wing Chun Filipino Escrima, Brazilian Jujitsu, Dumog, Pankration, Wrestling, Judo, Aikido, Savate, Shoot Fighting, and Boxing.

The RAT provides you with psychological aspects of fighting that will give you the upper hand in a violent confrontation.  The RAT will teach you how the human body reacts in situations that are perceived harmful. What is functional and what is not.  What works in real altercations.  Confidence and Clarity!  You will learn the three phases.

Phase I - Entry: Penetrating opponents defenses to close the gap into close range combat.
  •    Interceptions - Physiological and Psychological
  •    Destructions - Tools and techniques that inflict pain which allow entry.

Phase II - Pressure:  Physical advancements that put the opponent on the defensive
  •    Straight Blasting - Overwhelming series of punches that puts your attacker on the defensive.

Phase III - Termination: Tools that will quickly neutralize an attacker.
  •    Implementation of Termination Tools (head butts, knees, elbows, chokes, etc..)
  •    Intensification of Termination Tools (methods that "turbo charge" effectiveness)

What is the process of learning?

All of the courses offered are designed to be taught quickly and efficiently.  The processes by which students learn the systems are as followed:

  1. Learning - Student observes and is taught the philosophy behind the movement.
  2. Practicing - Student practices the movement being demonstrated repetitively through drills.
  3. Mastering - Student is able to complete the movement accurately with little error.
  4. Functionalizing - Student applies the movement in a realistic situation with a resisting opponent.
  5. Maintaining - Student continues training putting in "flight time" to maintain effectiveness.

Can you really learn so many arts?

The idea is not to learn each art in it's entirety but instead take what works from each art and apply it to the scenario it works best in.  Every art has something to offer for each individual situation.  Some arts are better used than others (ex. Muay Thai kicking over Tae Kwon Do kicking).  We are not mixing arts but instead adapting the best art to the situation.  Doing this develops a self defense system that is simple, easy to learn and is functional in real situations! My teachings are motivated by the work of my Sifu Paul Vunak and Dan Inosanto who teach a specific, effective, and efficient form of Jeet Kune Do (JKD).  The standup system is derived mainly from the Filipino Martial Arts, Wing Chun, and Muay Thai. We also incorporate submission fighting that originates in shoot fighting and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  Behavioral Psychology is used to enhance the learning process.

What are the requirements for learning?

Positive attitude and a willingness to learn. No previous martial arts experience is necessary. We train in an informal environment.  Competition is with yourself.  The art is individualized to fit your needs.
